ATOMIC4

Atomic 4 Maintenance Information

A. J. Matthews, Ay Mon, #605

I guess that it is no secret that my Atomic 4 is sitting in my garage waiting to be put back together. I was holding out for a new carburetor and I think that I have found a source.

Foley Engine Company had the Zenith Carb on special for $239.00, but I wasn't crazy about spending that much money. I had resigned to having the carb rebuilt and though that I would have to do it myself (I had an earlier source but they went out of business). Then I happened upon Pinellas Carburetor. Today, I was quoted a price of $139.00 WOW!. They also gave me a price of $81.00 to rebuild my existing unit. The units are not in stock, but they promise not more than a two to three day wait.

As I understand it, the A4 had a total of three (3) carbs. The one that was most prevalent on the older models was the old fashioned cast iron model. The name and type escapes me. The one that is in use most these days is the Zenith Carburetor. That is the one that I got the quote for $139, in the box, brand new. The parts inventory lists that particular part number (Model # 13355) as belonging to a Medalist engine (yes, the A4). It is still manufactured as opposed with the cast iron "lung." As all of the A4 manifolds were cast of the same mold, the Zenith carb is a dandy replacement for all of our trusted Cast Iron Friends.

Incidentally, I had a problem with my "water plate" when I was cleaning up my poor engine. Curiosity got the better of me when I found a curious little cavity on the inside. While chipping away at the rust, I knocked a hole into the side of the poor plate, rendering it useless. Hansen marine quoted me a price of $100 for the replacement. However, I made a promise to myself to never allow another to do what I could do for less (Yes, I am a tight wad). I decided to scrounge for a piece of 3" x 9" steel plate and found some 1/4 thick (I know, the Water Plate is only 3/16 so sue me). Using the original as a template, I drilled eight (8) 5/16 holes in their proper places then made a nice hole and tapped it for the 3/8 NPT "tee" fitting. the radius' were ground using a hand grinder and a vice. I am planning to put it all together the middle of next week I will let you know how it went. Oh by the way, I have $5.00 invested in the part.

As I was at my computer when I put much of this information together, I Decided to compile the list that I have gather to date to share with my fellow Tritoneers!

Still, my favorites will remain Depco Pump (they have all of the rebuild kits for the three A4 water pumps), Hansen Marine (great service and lots of parts in stock - but I have not tried Featherman yet) and Pinellas Carburetor (either the Tampa or Largo locations). At $139.00, I can afford to keep a spare!
