The new bulkhead is furniture-grade 3/4" birch ply. It's available at Home Depot, has no voids, and is comparable to marine grade stuff, according to the guru on the wooden boat site, the link to which I posted a couple weeks ago. ( I think it was about $50/sheet) I was gonna use the oak, but HD only stocks the red variety, and I was concerned about the tannin reacting to the bronze bolts and screws.

One other note: I've dispensed with using mat in the taping of the panels: the 1.5 oz stuff is too thick (I'm out of .75oz mat) and falls apart when I try to wet out thin strips; so now I'm using a minimum of four layers of 10 oz cloth. More where necessary.
